The devices included five motorised wheelchairs, together with wheelchair accessories such as seatbelts, cushions and covers, and also a number of alternative communication devices such as head pointers used for typing. These devices make a remarkable contribution to the learner’s level of independence, mobility and quality of life, ensuring they can focus on what matters in the classroom. The devices were donated by AngloGold Ashanti.
New Hope School is one of the largest schools for special education needs in South Africa. The Gauteng-based school is host to learners with disabilities such as learning disorders, degenerative diseases, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. The school was established as a non-profit organisation catering for special education needs, and places a strong focus on developing learners to the best of their unique ability, from nursery school to grade twelve. For the past five years, the school has received a 100% matric pass rate.
While New Hope School is primarily funded by the Department of Education, as is often the case with special needs schools, funding is insufficient to cover expenses. To ensure learners are enabled to continue to achieve an exemplary pass rate, the AngloGold Ashanti Chairman’s Fund became involved to supplement the funds needed to purchase special equipment for the learners. The company donated close to R300 000, which was used to purchase five motorized wheelchairs and equipment for learners selected by the school.
