Oscar’s appeal heads of argument due next week

Oscar Pistorius’s legal team has until next week to submit its heads of argument in the State’s appeal against the former paralympian’s culpable homicide conviction.
This date was provided by Nathi Mncube, spokesperson for the office of the chief justice.
“Members of the media are advised that the due date for the respondent’s heads of argument in the matter of Mr Oscar Pistorius is 17 September,” he said in a statement.
“The appeal will be held in the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein in November 2015. The date of the hearing will be communicated in due course.”
Pistorius was acquitted of murder on September 12 last year but was convicted of culpable homicide for shooting dead his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, on the morning of 2013.
On October 21 last year, he was sentenced to five years in prison for killing Steenkamp, and to three years — suspended for five — for discharging a firearm in a restaurant.
The State is appealing against the judgment, seeking a conviction on the more serious charge of murder.
Pistorius was due to be released on correctional supervision last month but the decision was suspended at the last minute by Michael Masutha, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services.
He did so after an objection by the Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa against the idea of releasing Pistorius during Women’s Month of August.
The minister concluded that proper procedures were not followed in the parole decision and referred the matter back to the parole board for a review.
