Accused abandons bail bid following fatal Spring Day celebration stabbing

The man is accused of stabbing and killing 21-year-old Tsepang Nyathe on September 1, in Refilwe Extension 3 after an argument over the participation in the tradition of being poured with water ensued.

A 53-year-old man has abandoned his bail application in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on September 8, after being charged with the fatal stabbing during a Spring Day celebration.

The man is accused of killing 21-year-old Tsepang Nyathe on September 1, in Refilwe Extension 3.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said that on September 1, a group of young people gathered to celebrate Spring Day by pouring water on one another and passersby.

“While the accused was walking past, it is alleged that the group attempted to pour water on him. He allegedly took out a knife and [began] stabbing the deceased.”

Mahanjana said the deceased was taken to a local clinic, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

“The accused was arrested that same day at Ekangala Hospital after he was allegedly apprehended and assaulted by members of the community.”

Mahanjana said the matter was postponed to October 27 for further investigation.

Police spokesperson Captain Johan Van Dyk said the victim had been celebrating Spring Day with friends when the incident occurred.

“They came across a man who refused to play along. An argument started as the passerby did not want to get wet. Then the fight pursued. He took out a knife from his back pocket and stabbed the victim on the left side upper body.”

Van Dyk said the victim died while being transported to hospital.

“The incident happened around 15:57 in Extension 3, Refilwe, Cullinan, Liphiri Street, a public road.”

Van Dyk also claimed that community members assaulted the suspect following the stabbing, after which he later sought medical treatment at Dark City Clinic in Ekangala.

Van Dyk echoed Mahanjana’s statement: “The suspect was traced [to] Ekangala Clinic where he was arrested.”

Today, family, friends and community members have gathered in Cullinan to pay their final respects to Tsepang Nyathe as he is laid to rest.

His death has left his loved ones devastated.
