A 25-year-old Winterveldt man has been arrested for killing his own son in a fit of anger on Thursday evening.
Police spokesperson Constable Petunia Chabangu said the 25-year-old had allegedly been angry and frustrated with his 7-year-old son.
“He grabbed the boy by the neck and threw him on to his bed,” Chabangu said.
The boy had just returned from school and was still in uniform.
Police said the boy bounced off the bed and hit the wall, suffering a severe head injury.
Neighbours heard the little boy screaming from pain and they went out to investigate.
“They found the boy laying on the floor, unresponsive,” said Chabangu.
The police and paramedics were called to the scene but by the time they arrived, the boy had already died.
She said police had to rescue the man from an angry mob intent on street justice.
“He was brutally injured and was rushed to George Mukhari hospital where he is said to be in critical but stable condition. He remains under police guard,” said Chabangu.
A neighbour who spoke on condition of anonymity told Rekord that the father had apparently been smoking marijuana before he attacked the child.
She said the suspect was abusive to the boy whenever his mother was absent. He would yell at the boy and smack him on the buttocks.
