Another attack at monument
Two women attacked and beaten while jogging in reserve.
There has been yet another attack in the Voortrekker Monument nature reserve.
Two women were beaten with rocks while jogging on Wednesday morning.
“I was running with a colleague of mine when next thing a guy came running behind us and hit me with a rock on the shoulder. He then picked another big one and hit me on the head,” said one of the women.
“I collapsed and lost consciousness. According to my colleague, the guy then took my phone and running shoes as well as my colleague’s shoes.”
The woman’s colleague had to leave her lying unconscious as she ran barefoot to the monument management to get help.
Voortrekker Monument general manager Sonja Lombard condemned the attack.
“This is the first time that joggers have been attacked,” said Lombard.
“We are meeting with the Pretoria Central police very soon to discuss what they could do to assist us. Although we do have good, competent security that react very quickly, there is only so much that we can do. We need assistance from the police.”
Lombard said that the paramedics arrived within minutes to treat the injured woman and she was taken to Unitas hospital.
The woman expressed disbelief at what happened to her.
“These thugs don’t tell you what they want, they just attack. I have realised you can die for a pair running shoes, old running shoes, and a cellphone.”
Lombard said: “We just want to reiterate to people coming into the reserve: Stay alert, and don’t jog alone. If possible, go in a large group and stay safe.”
This attack is the latest in a string of muggings at the reserve.
A 19-year-old Danish girl and a 16-year-old Centurion boy were robbed, beaten and tied up at the monument on 27 March and 2 May respectively. Both were cycling on their mountain bikes at the time, and have since recovered.
