Deputy sheriff awarded R77 000
Deputy sheriff Steven Britz will receive R77 000 from a man who assaulted him while Britz was trying to attach his car over two years ago.
A man from Meyerspark has been ordered to pay R77 000 to a Pretoria deputy sheriff.
The High Court in Pretoria issued the compensation order on Monday in favour of Steven Britz (71), who was assaulted while executing his duties over two years ago.
His lawyer, JJ Jacobs, said Britz had been assigned to attach a vehicle belonging to Raymond da Silva of Meyerspark.
“Da Silva arrived at the scene and started being aggressive towards my client,” he said.
Britz explained that he was only doing his job, but Da Silva continued to assault him. The deputy sheriff suffered a broken nose after being head-butted and hit on the knees.
“He was only doing his job, but the unfortunate incident left him in hospital,” said the lawyer.
“After he went back to work, Britz decided he needed to stand up for sheriffs. People need to understand that they are only doing their jobs. This victory is not only for Britz, but for all sheriffs.”
Jacobs said R2 000 of the money awarded was for loss of income during his client’s time away from work. the sum of R30 000 was for paying the medical bills and R45 000 was compensation for the humiliation Britz was subjected to.
“The wheels of justice might be slow but when they do turn, they make a positive turn,” Jacobs concluded.
