A 24-year-old man was arrested after a toddler was found dead in Rabie Ridge, Tembisa, on Saturday morning.
Police spokesperson Captain Jethro Mtshali said the arrest came after a manhunt was launched for the man when the one-year-old girl went missing on Friday night.
He said the man allegedly fled with the toddler after an argument with the child’s mother.
“It is alleged that the mother went out with the child, the suspect and some of their friends on Friday night. When the suspect was taking them home, an argument allegedly ensued between hi and the mother. The mother got out of the car and the suspect drove away with the child,” he said.
He said the mother immediately reported the child’s disappearance to police and a search was launched.
The toddler was found in an open field in Kanana, Tembisa, on Saturday morning after a tip-off from a resident, said Mtshali.
“She was found with minor bruises on her body which we cannot confirm where they came from. Police are investigating the cause of death.”
