Pistorius to wait two weeks for parole decision
The department of correctional services said the parole board's review on the release of Oscar Pistorius was postponed.
Oscar Pistorius will have to wait another two weeks to hear the parole board’s decision on his release under correctional supervision, the department of correctional services said.
The Correctional Supervision and Parole Board (CSPB) met on Friday to consider the legality of the athlete’s release.
This after Justice Minister Michael Masuthu suspended the decision for review shortly before Pistorius’ expected release on 21 August.
Correctional services spokesperson Manelisi Wolela said on Saturday the board could not finish the review on Friday and the matter had to be postponed.
“The department of correctional services can confirm the parole review board met to consider reviews on Friday… but unfortunately could not finish the role and had to postpone it for two weeks, because that is the earliest possible date for all members to attend.”
Pistorius served 11 months of his five year sentence when he was convicted of culpable homicide for shooting and killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.
Minister Masutha suspended the decision and referred it back to the board for a review, saying it was granted prematurely.
According to the minister, in terms of the law, the parole board should have only considered Pistorius’ release after he had served a sixth of his sentence.
