VIDEO: Watch thieves disable camera but still fail to steal gate motor
Attempted gate motor theft caught on camera.
Three would-be thieves were caught on camera in Glen Austin earlier this month trying to break into a house and steal a gate motor.
In the video, one of the men can be seen getting access to the yard via a small gate next to the main motorised gate.
Off camera, he checks if the coast is clear before trying to remove the green gate motor.
He is then joined by two cohorts, they notice the camera. They then run up and yank the camera from the wall.
The owner of the house, Willem Horn, said the men damaged the housing, but did not manage to get away with the motor.
“Luckily I have two protective bars across the motor,” said Horn.
Gate motor theft has been rife in Pretoria as well.
Earlier this year, Eersterust police spokesperson Constable Sam Shibambo said residents should take precautionary measures to safeguard their gate motors.
Shibambo urged residents not to wait until it was too late to save themselves the cost of having to replace their gate motors due to theft.
He advised residents to install a light next to the gate to enhance visibility, to mount the gate motor on a firm concrete slab and to weld it.
“Make a metal enclosure for the motor with thick bars to protect it from theft and link your gate sensors with an alarm system. We also urge residents to report people loitering around the area and not to buy stolen goods,” he said.
He has reported the attempted theft to the Midrand police and anyone with information on the men in the video can phone the police on 011-347-1626.
