A second man in the rape and murder case of a 24-year-old Soshanguve woman has been sentenced to life in jail.
Nineteen-year-old Mozambican, Aaron Chauke was sentenced by the High Court in Temba on Monday, a week after his accomplice, Marcus “Robot” Ngwenya (19), was sentenced to 53 years by Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates Court.
Police spokesperson, Constable Petunia Chabangu said both suspects from Mozambique, Chauke and Marcus, had terrorised the community of Soshanguve, Mabopane and Winterveldt, kidnapping, raping, killing and robbing women.
“He [Chauke] was found guilty on a charge of murder, two counts of rape, one for kidnapping and one for pointing a firearm,” said Chabangu.
Chabangu commended detectives, Warrant Officer Jeffrey Sello Lekalakala from the Temba police station and Detective Constable Alfred Motaung from the Loate SAPS for their sterling work in arresting the two.
“This should be a challenge to other police officers to work harder to crack cases and bring [the guilty] where they belong,” she said.
The first of the men to be arrested, Ngwenya was nabbed after a shop owner he was trying to sell a victim’s phone to recognised the victim’s husband whose picture was saved as the woman’s screensaver.
Concerned, the man called his friend.
“His friend told him [the shop owner] the phone belonged to his wife who had been robbed and raped,” Lekalakala had said from the witness box.
The man, with the help of the community, then apprehended Ngwenya before calling the police.
Ngwenya led investigators to Chauke.
