Woman arrested for hanging her dog

A crossbreed dog found hanging from a tree has led to the arrest of a 36-year-old woman in Gabalatsane, north of Pretoria.
SPCA inspector Mishack Matlou said a resident saw the woman hanging the dog and raised the alarm.
“We rushed to the scene, and unfortunately the dog was dead when we arrived at the scene,” said Matlou.
Locals passing by on Monday alerted SPCA officials. The animal was reportedly hanged earlier on Monday morning at Greenfield Section in Gabalatsane.
The woman tied the dog on a rope and left it to die.
“We found her in a calm mood, doing laundry at her home like nothing has happened,” said Matlou.
He said the SPCA called the police and the woman was arrested.
“She was charged with cruelty to animals,” said Matlou.
“She has appeared in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court and was released on bail. She is not denying the charges,” Matlou said.
“She said in a statement to the police that her pre-school going boy loved to play with the dog, and liked kissing it. She had feared her boy would pick up diseases from playing with the dog,” said Matlou.
The dog was tan and white in colour, and five months old.
Matlou asked: “How could someone be so cruel as to do this? It is high time now that our courts started taking a tough stand against animal cruelty.”
The man said he did so because the dog had eaten some of his chickens.
Matlou said the man thought nothing of his actions, saying he had become tired of the animal.
