Facebook page for Anika Smit closed
Facebook page honouring slain Anika Smit shut down
A Facebook page honouring murdered 17-year-old Anika Smit has been closed.
This came after a member of the public took and published a photograph of a protected witness at an inquest into her murder in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court.
Up to that point, witnesses in the proceedings were not allowed to be named under a court instruction.
As a result of the breach, the order protecting the identity of witnesses was lifted. It emerged that the witness, known as “Vampire” was Damien Treeby. His girlfriend, in earlier testimony, associated him with satanic activities.
Treeby admitted in his own testimony that he was involved with satanists and had drunk blood at a goth party he attended with his peers from his previous high school.
The inquest was postponed last week to investigate the individual who had posted Treeby’s photo on Facebook and to give Treeby time to obtain a lawyer.
The Facebook in Smit’s honour has since degenerated in a platform for finger-pointing and accusations. The owner said it would be shut down because the page was now being used to persecute those suspected of murdering Smit.
Smit was raped, mutilated and her hands were cut off at her father’s house in Theresa Park in 2010. Her hands have never been found. Smit was not at school on that day due to an ear infection.
It has emerged in evidence that Treeby was also not at school on the day of her murder.
The inquest into her death resumes on 3 October.
