Access control at Sunnyside copshop
The increase in incidents where firearms were robbed at various police stations also increased the need to ensure that the system is functioning optimally
Sunnyside police station received high technology to prevent crime from coming into the station.
Now citizens who visit the police station after 22:00 will have to buzz in at the gate.
Station commander Brigadier Nhlakanipho Mthembu said the system was installed because of the increase in security risks posed by easy access.
“Due to theft, there was a need to know who accessed the building after hours,” he said.
Mthembu said the system allowed access while protecting the station.
“The increase in robberies at various police stations where firearms were taken increased the need for security.”
He said the gate would be closed at 22:00 or when a security threat was detected.
“The public will still have access by pressing a buzzer. A close circuit camera will also be placed at the entrance.”
Mthembu dismissed the suggestion the system would cause officers to sleep on the job.
“There is a designated commander per shift to ensure personnel adhered to the code of conduct.”
“There are also duty officers who visit the station randomly so sleeping on duty should not be a concern.”
An access control system was initially installed in 1999, but it was stolen.
The recent one was fitted with a closed circuit camera and release switch.
Speaking to Rekord, Gauteng provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said: “The system is strictly for security reasons. Access control does not have any negative impact on service delivery and management have not received any complaints from our clients. The system is an upgrade of security at the station and the initiative was taken by management at the station,” he added.
