A light aeroplane is believed to have made an emergency landing on the Krugersdorp highway (R511) during lunch time on Friday.
Magnus Janse van Vuuren, operations manager at Lanseria Flight Centre, said he did not have details but had received information that a light aeroplane crash landed on the R511 shortly after lunch.
“It is unclear how many people were on board the inbound plane to Grand Central Airport in Midrand or if anyone was injured. We are not sure how much damage the plane sustained or what the cause of the crash landing was. However it is very likely that there was a technical glitch mid-air,” he said.
A control attendant at the Krugersdorp fire department said he had not received a distress call from anyone regarding the aircraft.
“We should have been notified by now but we know nothing,” he said.
Cecile Ferreira of the Krugersdorp Flying Club also denied any knowledge of the crash landing.
“If it was one of ours I would have been informed about it straight away.
At this stage it is impossible to tell who the aircraft belongs to,” she said.
Johan Pieterse, spokesperson the Tshwane Emergency Services, said he was unaware of the landing.
