Drug, vehicle crime up in Pretoria central

Theft out of motor vehicles and drug-related crime have shot up in the Pretoria central policing district since 2014.
This emerged from the latest crime statistics released by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko and national police commissioner Riah Phiyega at Parliament on Tuesday.
From the April 2014 to March, 1617 cases of theft out of motor vehicles were reported compared to the corresponding period a year before.
Drug-related crimes increased from 1622 in 2014 to 2122 in 2015.
And 205 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs up to 2015 compared to 181 during the previous period.
National spokesperson Lieutenant-General Solomon Makgale said technology played a huge part in the increase.
“People are always introducing the latest gadgets that made it easier for them to commit vehicle-related crimes,” he said.
Crimes that have increased showed that police were doing a good jobs.
“This means that a lot of people were arrested as a result of visible policing,” he said.
But residents might be please to know that their life-expectancy has gone up.
Makgale said 16 people were killed in the central police district compared to 20 a year before and 101 cases of sexual assault case in 2015 compared to 118 last year.
