Carnival for childhood cancer
A carnival for childhood cancer was held at the University of Pretoria's sports grounds on Sunday.
The Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa (CHOC) held a carnival at the University of Pretoria‘s sports grounds to create awareness around childhood cancer this weekend.
Arts and craft stalls were set up all around the grounds, making sure there was something for everyone.
Children of various ages, parents and sponsors came to the event, and the little ones were entertained by children’s entertainment group The Clamber Club.
Kids enjoyed face painting and horseback riding, while the men battled it out in a tug-of-war at the carnival centre.
“This is the first carnival for childhood cancer, and we hope to hold many more events like this to help raise awareness,” said CEO of CHOC, Carl Queiros.
“Today is about educating people about the symptoms for childhood cancer. A lot of people don’t know the symptoms of cancer in children and that the cancer success rate usually depends on early detection.”
Queiros also clarified what was meant by childhood cancer, emphasising that any child between the ages of 4 and 18 was eligible for assistance and treatment from CHOC.
He concluded by thanking the sponsors involved.
CHOC reginal manager, Ina Schomper, said they hoped to create greater awareness of childhood cancer and how to detect it early.
She said CHOC would hold another fun-filled event next year.
