Lab workers demand more money

Police said the protesters outside the Icon Industrial Park in Sunderland Ridge were calm.

Pharmachem Laboratories staff picketed at the entrance gate of Icon Industrial Park in Sunderland Ridge on Wednesday morning, demanding a pay rise.

Police spokesperson Constable Itumeleng Moloto said they barricaded Barolong Street, using rocks and burning tyres.

They also blocked the entrance, forcing businesses to shut down. Employers sent non-striking workers home for their own safety.

Moloto said the protesters had calmed down by the afternoon but had not returned to work.

Moloto said public order police officers were stationed in the area to keep watch.

He said Barolong street was still blockaded by rocks, but would be cleared soon.

“We are waiting for extra manpower to remove the rocks and debris from the burnt tyres.”

Pharmachem is situated close to the R55 but it was unaffected by the protest.
