Bus drivers back at work

A date is yet to be set for a follow-up disciplinary hearing against Tshwane bus drivers who refuse to sell tickets for cash to commuters.

Tshwane bus services were running smoothly on Monday morning after Friday’s disciplinary hearing of 139 drivers who refused to sell cash tickets to commuters.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the metro and the SA municipal workers’ union met to make their submissions and objections.

“The presiding officer requested these be done in writing. A date for the next sitting will be announced later,” Mashigo said.

The union’s regional secretary, Mpho Tladinyane, said the union raised other issues at the hearing besides the cash issue.

“We asked preliminary questions, but the metro was not ready to answer our questions. We had also requested some documents, but they did not have them. Instead we were told that those documents will be sent to us within seven working days.”

Tladinyane said all 139 drivers who appeared before the disciplinary committee were back at work on Monday.

“Everything is back to normal, but the drivers are still not selling tickets,” Tladinyane said.

At the beginning of the month bus drivers refused to go on duty as a form of protest against handling cash in buses, saying this posed a security threat to them.

Days later they went back to work but refused to sell tickets to commuters. A number of meetings between the metro and Samwu were held and the drivers were issued with notices that they faced suspension.
