Burst pipes left overnight amid water restrictions

Burst water pipe spills kilolitres of water amid water restrictions.

A burst water pipe on the corner of the R55 and Lochner Road in Raslouw was left unrepaired overnight, spilling kilolitres of water.

Ward councillor Marika Kruger Muller said the burst water pipe was reported to the metro just after 17:00 on Tuesday afternoon but only shut off after 08:00 on Wednesday morning.

“We are in the midst of a water crises. Burst water pipes like this one need to be repaired much quicker. We cannot have water wastage like this. We demand quicker response times,” said Muller.

The water leak is suspected to have been caused by a building contractor working nearby.

This comes after the Tshwane metro introduced water restrictions on 22 October.

In a statement, the metro said: “Rand Water issued Tshwane metro with a notification stating that the Rand Water supply pipeline servicing Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg was under severe strain due to increased water demand. The increased water demand was caused by high temperatures.”

The metro said water restrictions were an enforcement of the water supply by-law.

The restrictions include:

• Watering/irrigating gardens with hosepipes or sprinkler systems from 06:00 to 18:00;

• Washing vehicles with hosepipes; and

• Topping up or filling swimming pools.
