Public to be informed about BRT
Residents are encouraged to attend a public meeting at which Tshwane will reveal details of the extension of A Re Yeng to January Masilela Drive.
The extension of the Tshwane metro’s bus rapid transit (BRT) system is going ahead despite the objection to plans to decrease lanes on two major roads in the east to accommodate a bus lane.
While the notice of intent to narrow Atterbury and Lynnwood roads to a single lane in both directions for general traffic will only be published for public participation next year, the metro has called a meeting for Tuesday 10 November to discuss the extension of the BRT route from Menlyn to January Masilela Drive.
The meeting will be at the Alkantrand Library on the corner of Daventry and Lynnburn roads, Lynnwood at 18:00.
“Residents’ associations are encouraged to send representatives to the meeting. One of the consequences of this proposal will be densification of the area around the bus station,” said DA councillor Siobhan Muller.
The extended route will include one station and construction on Dallas Road, but the implementation of the BRT from Menlyn to Loftus Versfeld has been postponed following the decision to commission a new traffic impact assessment and economic impact assessment surveys.
The metro last year unanimously decided to change its original plan of extending the road surface to a third lane for the BRT, instead announcing it would reserve one lane in both directions exclusively for the bus to save cost.
Traffic management experts, residents and businesses were up in arms about the decision, claiming it would cause a traffic nightmare, effectively cutting off the east from the CBD.
At the time, the DA announced its intention to petition against the plan and had collected more than 3 500 signatures to date.
