Once frequently used mailboxes on the corner of Panorama and Rooihuiskraal roads, The Reeds, have been abandoned and left to rot.
The small building in which the mailboxes are housed is in a state of decay. The ceiling is crumbling, trash cans are overflowing, the gardens are overgrown and vagrants are sleeping in the abandoned building.
Ward councillor Casper McDonald said he has heard of drugs being dealt from the abandoned building.
“I get a lot of complaints from residents concerned about the vagrants that have moved in,” said McDonald.
“There is a lot of rubbish here that is never cleaned up. The gardens aren’t maintained and the grids over the storm water trench next to the building have been stolen. This needs to be fixed urgently.”
Khulani Qoma, spokesperson for the SA post office, said the process of recommissioning the mailboxes has been undertaken.
“Due diligence for the project has been finalised and a contractor appointed. The target date for completion is 20 November 2015,” said Qoma.
He said the mailboxes will be returned to normal use once the project has been completed.
“The SA post office is paying special attention to ensure the mailboxes are safe and secure for its customers,” he said.
