More data for Tshwane free Wi-Fi users

The Tshwane metro has increased the daily data limit to its free Wi-Fi users at Wi-Fi hotspots across the metro.
Previously, users were allowed 250 megabytes per day, per device, but this has increased to 500 megabytes.
Metro mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa said this equated to about 15 gigabytes per user per month.
He said the metro had heeded the call by pupils and students, who had said the 250MB was hardly enough to access online educational resources.
“With the new limit, they will be able to use the service to complete projects, submit assignments and conduct research online,” said Ramokgopa.
Users will now experience a better online learning experience, he said.
“Users are also provided with unlimited access to online content on education, economic opportunity and social cohesion via Tobetsa, Project Isizwe’s platform, should they use up all their allowable data,” he said.
Tshwane’s free Wi-Fi service has been hailed as the largest government-funded free Wi-Fi made available to the public in South Africa.
It reached a major milestone of one million unique connections at the end of October.
Launched in 2013, the service has 711 free internet sites across the metro.
Each site allows users with Wi-Fi enabled devices to access the internet for free, without any logins or passwords. Free Wi-Fi is also available on all Tshwane A Re Yeng buses.
In August, the metro added three features to this free Wi-Fi to enable voice calls, chatting and Drive In.
According to the latest statistics, most users are between the ages of 18 and 24, 51% of them male and 49% female and 81% connect using a mobile phone.
