Domestic worker case postponed, again
"This case is taking an emotional and physical toll on me," said a well-known DA councillor after the case against her domestic worker, who had planned to murder and rob her, was postponed for the third time.
Magistrate Nico Noeth reprimanded a defence lawyer on Wednesday morning, for not being prepared for a case that had been postponed three times already.
“I do not understand how you could lose the docket (file). There is no reason for you not being prepared when this case continues. You are wasting my and the state witnesses’ time.”
Mariam Kekane (37), a domestic worker who planned the murder and robbery of a well-known DA councillor from Pretoria Moot, appeared again in the Pretoria North magistrate’s court for identity theft.
She had allegedly stolen the ID, salary slips and other documentation from the councillor and used it to open several accounts, among other, with the furniture shop Barlow’s.
According to the councillor, who would like to remain anonymous as she fears for her life, she already received an account from Barlow’s stating that her monthly instalment is R2 400.
Kekane was released on bail about a month ago. “I am very upset,” the councillor said when Kekane was granted bail. “I still fear for my life as Mariam and her accomplices [who have not been arrested yet] planned to shoot me using my bullets. This story is taking a toll on my physical and mental health,” the councillor said.
At this stage, it is unclear whether Kekane would face charges of conspiring to murder and robbery.
Dressed in an expensive yellow jacket and pinstriped dress, Kekane glared at the councillor while whispering in the ear of a well-dressed man who escorted her to court.
Kekane worked for the councillor for about two years. “I trusted her and treated her like one of my own children,” the councillor said.
She realised her domestic worker was up to no good when Lucky Khosana called her saying the domestic worker had offered him a laptop which apparently belonged to the councillor’s partner. But the man was still waiting for the domestic worker to bring the charger.
Then the story of how the domestic worker planned to rob and kill her unfolded. From then, the councillor involved the police.
Khosana and the councillor are going to testify against Kekane.
The case was postponed to 8 December.
