Brutal dog killer arrested

The man that chased, cornered and shot dead his neighbour's dog in Mooikloof was arrested, police said.

The man who allegedly chased, cornered and shot his neighbour’s dog three times in Mooikloof has been arrested, police said.

The 13-month-old Basset, known as Bismarck, died shortly after the shooting after straying onto the man’s property on Friday morning.

“He was arrested at the weekend, and faces charges of malicious damage to property and animal cruelty,” said Boschkop police spokesperson Captain Marissa van der Merwe.

She said the man was expected to appear in court on Thursday.

Dog owner Hennie De Jager said two of his dogs had gone out of his yard around 06:30.

“The dogs ended up on my neighbour’s property. He chased them and cornered them and fired four times. Bismarck was hit three times,” he said.

De Jager said the man left Bismarck to die slowly.

“We had put a cone around his neck so he could stop digging and squeezing himself under the fence to get out the yard but he managed to. This is terrible. We do not have any children and our five dogs are like our kids.”

Wetnose Animal Rescue centre’s Jacques van der Merwe said Bismarck was shot in the stomach, resulting in a slow and painful death.

“That animal did not need to be shot and left to die in that way,” he said.
