Life lost for cigarettes of R500 000
Cigarettes hijacked on Friday in Moreleta Park worth half a million rands.
A hijacking that ended in the death of a bystander in Centurion on Friday was about cigarettes of half-a-million rands.
Police said on Saturday cigarettes taken from a hijacked British American Tobacco truck in Moreleta Park had a retail value of R500 000.
Spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu said 26 boxes of cigarettes were loaded from the hijacked truck into a Huyndai H1 driven by the robbers. It was spotted by police.
“Police chased them along Solomon Mahlangu Drive. The fugitives skipped red traffic lights, but crashed into a wall on the corner of Cradock and Trichardt streets in Centurion.”
Gumbu said two of the fleeing men were arrested. The hijackers were also using two other cars, a BMW and Audi.
Police knew of a third man who escaped, but believed more people were involved in the hijacking.
Gumbu could not confirm reports that firerams were discovered on the scene.
A bystander was killed by a stray bullet during a shooting between the fugitives and the police.
He was Willy Mosenye (32), a courier for De Beer De Jager Radiologist.
