Police operations are continuing throughout the festive season with 83 arrests made in the Sunnyside cluster area of Sunnyside, Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Villieria, Pretoria Moot and Lyttelton police stations over the Christmas weekend.
Police spokesperson Captain Collette Weilbach said the intensified crime-fighting had resulted in the arrests.
“The police focused on drug and alcohol related crimes as the drugs and alcohol abuse remain a major contributory factor to serious crimes such as rape, murder and assault,” said Weilbach in a statement.
“Twelve drug-related arrests were made.”
She said police high visibility in residential areas and shopping malls kept criminals at bay, and resulted in the arrest of eight people for possession of suspected stolen property, one for possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, four for robbery, ten for shoplifting, three for theft and five for assault.
Undocumented foreigners and pedestrians that endangered other road users were among the arrests.
The suspects will appear in the Hatfield Community and Pretoria Magistrate’s courts on Monday.
The Sunnyside cluster police are continuing to embark on focused and highly visible operations aimed at ensuring a crime-free festive season.
The community can assist the police by taking responsibility to safeguard their property and use alcohol responsibly.
