A 55-year-old resident in the Moot was assaulted close to her home after she allegedly tried to stop two thieves from stealing her neighbour’s motorbike.

Marieta De Beer told Rekord about the brutal assault after she tried to warn her neighbours about a theft in progress.

“I was driving on my way back home from Waverley about 24:15 that morning,” she recalls the incident of Thursday 17 December.

“The streetlights were out in 33 Avenue and when I got closer to my neighbour’s house I saw two figures pushing a motorbike down the street.”

De Beer said she recognised the motorbike as light from her vehicle’s headlights fell on it.

“It was my neighbour’s motorbike. I couldn’t see clearly the two boys pushing it but I assumed it was my neigbour’s kids,” said De Beer.

She said the two young men seemed to be arguing. “One of the boys backed away from the bike and the other lowered it to the ground.”

De Beer said she stopped her car to help, thinking one of the boys might have fallen over.

When she got out she realised that it wasn’t her neighbour’s kids at all. “The two dark-skinned boys couldn’t have been older than 16 or 17,” she says.

Realising they were trying to steal the motorbike, De Beer got back in her car and honked her horn to alert the neighbours.

“It was then that one of the young men dived into my car’s open window and started punching me in the face.”

De Beer said she kept on hooting as her assailant hit her.

“My nose and mouth were full of blood. I couldn’t see through my swollen eyes.”

De Beer said eventually her neighbour came out to see what was going on and the two young men fled.

De Beer said she received little help from her neighbour or police when she reported the incident.

“I just want to warn people of the dangers in the Moot. I won’t think of trying to help someone or stop a theft again after this.”
