Three men were caught in the act and arrested for cable theft at a substation in La Montagne, the Meyerspark neighbourhood watch said on Monday.
Steph Joubert, spokesperson of the watch said they received calls from residents in the early hours of 31 December.
“They said lights had just gone off and they knew of no load-shedding scheduled to take place.
We promptly went to the nearby substation to investigate and caught the men in the act,” said Joubert.
The trio was in the process of cutting off cable while their accomplice brought a vehicle to pick up their loot, said Joubert.
“Cable thieves are dropped off at the scene by an accomplice who allows them access into the substation and then locks them inside. The accomplice then returns to pick them up once the job is complete. He will open up, load the stolen cable then drive off,” he said.
This time around though, the thieves were not as lucky as they were caught in the act. “We promptly called the police who arrested them,” he said.
