Police warn pedestrians and motorists about the high risks of using the Stormvoël off-ramp in East Lynne.

Villieria police spokesperson Captain Coba Brits said the Stormvoël off-ramp on the N1 in East Lynne was identified as a high risk area following various crimes range from hijackings to attempted murder that happened in 2015.

“Various crimes have been reported in this area and most of them occur late at night. The victims are pedestrians, motorists and truck drivers. Although patrols by police and metro police are done on an hourly basis, the public also need to be observant of their surroundings,” she said.

Brits emphasised on the issue of pedestrians crossing the freeway.

“Pedestrians are not permitted to cross or be on the freeway. This is where a lot of robberies occur.”

“We urge truck drivers to be vigilant and not make stops anywhere or speak to strangers as hijackings are very common. Hijackers have a habit of tricking motorists by claiming they have a flat tyre or there’s something wrong with their vehicle in order to hijack motorists,” she said.

Brits said the public must work together with the police to ensure a decrease in crime.

“About 30 to 32 crimes that happened around the Stormvoël off-ramp were reported last year. Those crimes range from hijackings to attempted murder.”

Crime prevention rather than crime reporting needs to be the point of view, she said.
