Residents suffer weeks of raw sewage spills

A leaking sewer pipe has been making life unbearable for residents of units 7, 8 and 10 in Ga-Rankuwa.

Residents of units 7, 8 and 10 in Ga-Rankuwa say they have had enough of the raw sewage making life unbearable for several few weeks.

Residents have been complaining for more than four weeks about raw sewage spilling out into the streets and into their yards from under manholes. They suspect blocked underground pipes are causing the spillage.

Alfred Ncube, whose house is close to one manhole, said it was difficult to live with the stench.

“We have reported the leakage to the local ward councillor, but it has been over two weeks now and nothing is happening.

“We have had to bear the smell for so many days now. I’m also worried about my children and grandchildren because they usually play there and I’m worried they will get ill,” he added.

Ward Councillor Dan Sekonya confirmed to Rekord that he had received complaints from residents and had reported the matter to the Tshwane metro.

“I have reported the matter to the local municipality. Our people must be patient. The municipality will send people to come and fix the problem,” he said.

The Tshwane metro has not been available for comment.
