Residents of the Tshwane metro have been urged to check their voter registration status ahead of the 2016 municipal elections.
City council Speaker Morakane Mosupyoe-Letsholo said the poll was the very basis of South Africa’s democracy as it was about electing local leaders.
“Citizens aged 18 years and older are encouraged to register to vote. If you vote, you can participate and have a say in how your city is managed. Your vote is your ticket to a better life,” she said.
The election date for the 2016 poll is still to be announced.
The Independent Electoral Commission had set 5 and 6 March 2016 as the weekend for voter registration.
Mosupyoe-Letsholo said residents could visit registration offices to register as first-time voters, to check if they were on the voters’ roll or to change their registration if they had moved since the last elections.
Democratic Alliance councillor Clive Napier said eligible voters should register under the address at which they live at present.
Unlike parliamentary and provincial elections, voters had to vote at the polling station where they were registered.
“The reason for this is that at the local government election voters vote for a person and a party to represent their interests in a specific suburb and ward in which they live,” he said.
“A voter cannot for example, register to vote in Centurion and then vote in Johannesburg.”
Municipal electoral offices were open for voters to register from Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00.
To register to vote you must be a South African citizen, be 18 years and older, and have a green bar coded ID book/Smart ID card.
