Criminal charges over “grave violation”

The DA plans to lay criminal charges against the Tshwane metro on Wednesday, for vandalising graves at the Pretoria East Cemetery.

Criminal charges will be laid against the Tshwane metro on Wednesday for the common law crime of “violating a grave”.

DA councillor and Tshwane shadow finance MMC, Lex Middelberg, planned to take the metro to task at the Garsfontein police station after workers started clearing the space between graves at the Pretoria East cemetery last week.

Middelberg claimed the council had used heavy earth moving equipment between the rows of graves, demolishing everything but the headstones in an incorrect application of a 2015 by-law.

“The families and loved ones of those departed and buried in cemetery deserve answers, and a criminal sanction for the violation of these graves must follow,” Middelberg said.

Middelberg said after laying charges, he and DA Tshwane mayoral candidate, Solly Msimanga would meet the families of those buried at the cemetery so they show Msimanga how the metro’s action had affected them.

“The metro has clearly violated the rights of the families and the DA will do all that it can to assist at this very difficult time,” Middelberg said
