ANC members threaten Ramokgopa’s family home again

Party members have threatened another protest if the provincial executive committee did not provide feedback on the Atteridgeville ward elections.

The home of Tshwane metro mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa’s parents was threatened again on Sunday. Protesters burnt tyres in the street not too far from the home prompting police to send a team and calm the situation.

The violence reportedly flared up outside the Atteridgeville home on Sunday but the SA Communist Party has dismissed the threat as the actions of mischievous residents.

Walter Tompane, member of the ANC and leader of the SACP in Atteridgeville, said the “so-called protest” never gained momentum.

“Mischievous community members started burning tyres in the street. It was not directly in front of the mayor’s parents house. But, because of the protest a few weeks ago, metro police and SAPS came to the scene in numbers. It was their presence that created a lot of attention and drew crowds,” said Tompane.

He did not rule out a follow-up protest after the ANC provincial executive council failed to honour a promise to intervene in the alleged rigging of the nomination of candidates for the local government election had caused the earlier protest.

“The provincial executive committee promised feedback on whether the selection process would be conducted afresh. They had said they would do so by this week, but time is running out. If they have not given us feedback by the weekend, then they should expect a protest of epic proportions,” he said.

Tompane said protesters believed the PEC was deliberately stalling for time until it was too late to start the process afresh.

ANC Tshwane regional spokesperson Teboho Joala said the ‘protestors’ were not members of the ANC. “If they were they would have followed the proper internal complaints channels and procedures, rather than taking to the street,” he said.

A few weeks ago, protesters took to the streets and burnt tyres and chanted slogans in front of Ramokgopa’s parents home after blaming him for replacing people chosen by the community to stand for election with his allies.
