Caution at BRT site recommended

A pedestrian accident near the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) construction site in the north of Pretoria has highlighted a need for caution in the area.

“Safety is a concern and while construction continues we must urge people using the road to be careful,” said DA councillor Dana Wanneburg on Thursday.

Wannenburg raised concerns about construction plans a week ago, saying it could cause more problems than solutions for motorists.

A pedestrian was hurt near the site on Thursday morning when he was knocked over by a car.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the man suffered moderate injuries.

“The pedestrian was hit by a light motor vehicle and was taken to hospital for treatment,” Mathe said.

Wannenburg called on the CPF to help regulate traffic.

He told Rekord last week that plans for the new taxi-rank at the BRT site did not include a turn-around point.

Taxis making illegal U-turns to pick up commuters on the other side of the road would soon become a problem, Wanneburg predicted.

“Vendors and hawkers would also have to move across the road where there is no access to water and toilet facilities,” he said.

“This means that they would regularly have to cross the road.”

Wanneburg advised pedestrians crossing the road to use the footbridge in Paul Kruger Street.

“Although it would take longer for pedestrians, it is highly advised that they do so rather than risk their own safety.”
