New housing development for Fort West

The new Fort West Extension 4 township will possibly contain 5 912 houses.

The Tshwane metro has agreed to a plan to build a multimillion rand housing development in Fort West in the west of Pretoria.

The metro said it had budgeted R81 million for the new township to be called Fort West Extension 4 – a mixed use housing project with 5 912 houses.

Construction is expected to commence this year funded by the metro and Gauteng government.

The project will provide subsidised, rental and bonded houses to people in Vergenoeg and Matlejane in Atteridgeville.

Fort West is famous for the old leprosy hospital which was built in the 1890s but was closed in the 1990s. The project was first mooted in 2003 but nothing came of it. The land earmarked for the development has a few graves.

The department of roads and transport has requested that a traffic impact study be conducted to establish the impact of the township on provincial roads in the area.

Mayoral spokesperson Blessing Manale said the project had been impeded by a water use licence application which was still to be approved by the water department.

He said: “This project is in line with our vision of Remaking the Capital City programme which is all about intervening decisively in the transformation of human settlements, the space economy as well as the creation of functioning nodes.”
