St Alban’s College Rowing Club excels at SA Schools Rowing Champs 2016

St Alban's College Rowing Club was named the top sculling school and came fifth overall at the recent South African School Rowing Championships.

Following in the wake of their successes at Boat Race in December last year, and the Buffalo Regatta last month, St Alban’s College Rowing Club was named the top sculling school and came fifth overall at the recent South African School Rowing Championships.

This final and most important regatta of the season was held from 4 to 6 March at the Roodeplaat Dam, with 1 257 rowers from 39 clubs and schools (including Zimbabwe) taking part. The u.14 doubles fared well in their first SA Champs getting a bronze (Sebastian Ringrose, Kyle Jericevich) and 8th place (Liam Helen, Ehros Smith).

The strong u.16 age group managed three scullers in the A-Final with Nicholas Botoulas 2nd, Daniel Philipps 4th, and Dillan Laubscher in 5th place.

The u.16 double of Nicholas Botoulas and Daniel Philipps won gold, with Daniel de Villiers and Hannes Kruger in 8th place.

The u.16 quad of Nicholas Botoulas, Daniel Philipps, Dillan Laubscher, Brad Johnston, and Craig Solomon (cox) earned a gold medal in record-breaking fashion.

Three Open scullers made the A-Final with Nicholas Mason coming 3rd, Josh Harty 6th, and Gabriel Smith 8th. St Alban’s again had three entries in the open doubles A-Final with Nicholas Mason and Gabriel Smith winning gold, Luke Knibbs and Robert Saunders in 4th place and Josh Harty and Thomas Scholtz in 5th place.

The quad of Thomas Scholtz, Luke Knibbs, Dillan Laubscher, Cameron Jackman, and Brad Johnston (cox) earned 5th place in the A-Final. The 1st Quad of Nicholas Mason, Josh Harty, Robert Saunders, Gabriel Smith and Brad Shipp (cox), got first place winning this race for St Alban’s for the 13th consecutive year.

The u.16 Quad (Nicholas Botoulas, Daniel Philipps, Dillan Laubscher, and Brad Johnston) qualified for the South African Schools Rowing Union (SASRU) tour to the United Kingdom in April. The Open Doubles of Nicholas Mason, Gabriel Smith, Robert Saunders, Luke Knibbs, Josh Harty and Thomas Scholtz and cox Brad Shipp were all invited to trial for the South African Junior Worlds to be held in Rotterdam later this year.
