Rivers of sewage in Riverview
Residents breath a sigh of relief as sewage leak is repaired after three weeks.
Residents in the Riverview complex in Thatchfield are hopefully rid of a very stinky problem.
Rivers of raw sewage flowed through the complex for nearly three weeks, and the residents said they struggled to get the leak repaired.
Tobie Botha, a resident, said he had a raw sewage leak started on 17 March, in his garden and progressively worse.
“It started out small, just bubbling up from the grass,” said Botha.
“Shortly after, it became like a river running down my garden and out underneath the wall. I was seriously concerned because my young son loves water and we had to keep him and our three dogs away from it.”
It was finally repaired this past weekend, but Botha said the sewage, which was littered old toilet paper and used sanitary products, was still in his garden.
The leak in Botha’s started just days after another was fixed outside the complex. On the same day another one sprang up from the top of the complex through to Botha’s garage, at the very bottom.
Another resident, Beverley Terry said she battled to get through to the Tshwane metro hotline to report the multiple leaks for weeks.
“The phone just keeps on ringing and eventually line cuts off,” she said.
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said any issue in a residential complex should be reported by the body corporate or managing agent to the complex.
“When residents report to the metro directly, workers often cannot get access to the complex to do the repair work,” said Mashigo.
“Going through the management will ensure that metro worker can get in and carry out the work.”
He advised residents not living in complexes to report their service delivery problems to the city’s helpline 012-358-9999 or 012-358-2111.
