Sport highlights 8-10 April
Locally there are this weekend rugby, cricket and football to look forward to and on the international front golf lovers cannot wait for the first tee-off in the American masters.
The Titans could be a bright spot this weekend for sports fans of Pretoria. They have the chance to secure their second trophy of the season.
Cricket
After the Titans have won the Ram Slam T20 tournament earlier this season, they can also become South Africa’s four-day champions this weekend if they can manage to beat the Cape Cobras in their last four-day game in the Sunfoil series.
With the Highveld Lions breathing down their necks, the Titans will have to win their last game against the Cape Cobras this weekend if they want to claim the trophy. The game will be played at Paarl from Thursday 7 April to Sunday 10 April. Play starts at 10:00 daily.
Rugby
Believe it or not, but it’s already week seven of the SupeRugby tournament this weekend. The Bulls travel to Port Elizabeth to play against the Kings on Saturday night. This game starts at 19:10.
– It is Carlton rugby time again. The BBRU Carlton Rugby Club Competition starts Thursday and Saturday this week. A few changes were made for the good of the competition. The u.20 and u.21 teams will compete on Thursdays and the senior teams over the weekends. The competition will be played over a double round, on a home and away basis.
Platinum Cup: Rustenburg Impala Club from North-West will again compete against the other Carlton clubs but in a separate competition on a home and away basis.
Fixtures for this weekend (Carlton A): Naka Bulls vs Harlequins; Police vs Centurion; Tuks vs Impala.
Athletics
The Ford Athletics Club presents the Ford 3-in-1 road race this Saturday. The race will start and end at the Ford Motor Company sports ground, corner of Simon Vermooten and Alwyn Streets, Silverton.
The event includes a 21,1km half-marathon, a 10km road race and a 5km fun run. Wheelchairs are welcome to enter the fun run. The first race starts at 06:30.
Soccer
The Premier Soccer League continues this week. Two of the local teams will be in action over the weekend, while one team will only play next week Wednesday.
Tuks are still dangerously low on the log and they need a few victories urgently. The play against the only team lower than themselves on the log, Maritzburg United. The looser of this game will therefore be right at the bottom of the log after the final whistle. This game will be played at the Harry Gwala stadium on Saturday at 18:00.
On Sunday, SuperSport United plays against Chippa United in the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. This game starts at 15:00.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ fans will have to wait until Wednesday to see their team in action. They will take on Polokwane City in the Old peter Mokaba Stadium at 19:30.
Golf
It is that time of the year again when every golf lover in the world wants to make small talk about the big one in America – The Masters. As usual the tournament will take place on the difficult course of the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.
South Africa will be represented by five top golfers, namely Trevor Immelman, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace, and Ernie Els. Hopefully one of them can repeat the performance of Immelman in 2008 and Schwartzel in 2011. Both of them won this prestigious tournament in those mentioned years.
