Visually impaired Tuks athlete graduates tops at Tuks
A visually impaired student has overcome a string of obstacles to obtain her master’s degree in recreation and sport management.
Carley Lomax is receiving her MA at the University of Pretoria on Wednesday.
She obtained her BSport Science degree at the university in 2011, followed by a BA Honours in recreation and corporate wellness in 2012.
Lomax has also excelled in the field of athletics and joined Tuks athletics to compete in the 100 metre, 200 metre and long jump.
Her advice to aspiring athletes and students was to never give up.
“Perseverance overcomes failure and turns the extra-ordinary achievement into great success,” said Lomax.
She said nothing was impossible and obstacles should be seen as challenges.
Lomax aspires to become a school teacher.
“I hope the platform as a teacher will allow me to combine my sport science and fitness knowledge to assist with the development of sports in local schools,” she said.
Lomax said she was hoping to qualify for the Rio 2016 Paralympics in September.
