Parks of shame haunt Laudium
Laudium residents concerned about the lack of maintenance of their roads and parks.
Unmaintained parks and roads are causing a headache for Laudium residents.
Anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee said the state of the parks and roads in Laudium is becoming worse by the day.
“As residents, we are complaining, we want the state of our roads to improve,” he said
“If the roads are not fixed, a lot of cars will get damaged and accidents will happen.”
On Friday, some of the potholes on Pierre van Ryneveld Road by the M22 were patched up after Abramjee complained to the municipality via Rekord on Tuesday.
“We want this road to be properly fixed because it is a shortcut to town [Pretoria CBD]. I’ve been in contact with the municipality and it has told it didn’t have enough money to fix this road, which is funny because millions were spent to fix the M22/Quagga road.”
The M22 links Pretoria West, Atteridgeville, Laudium and Erasmia.
Abramjee also bemoaned the state of children’s play areas.
“The Jacaranda Park is no longer safe for our kids. We call it the park of shame because it’s dirty and no one wants to take responsibility to clean it despite workers being available to do so.”
Ward councillor Farouk Essop said he had reported the matter to the metro.
“It is aware… informed it about the state of roads and parks and it said it would attend to them sometime next week.”
But a resident was disgusted with the councillor, who lived across the road from the park, for not doing anything to get it sorted out.
“The councillor lives opposite [the park] in this big house,” a local said pointing to the house.
“This is no longer a park, it’s a bush.”
