Laerskool celebrates 80th birthday

Laerskool Bergsig principal privileged to be part of the school's 80th anniversary.

Laerskool Bergsig in Mountain View celebrated its 80th anniversary on Thursday.

Hundreds of pupils descended on the school’s rugby field to observe this milestone with their teachers.

Laerskool Bergsig school first opened in 1936 with only 84 pupils.

Principal Willie Beneke said it was an honour to be part of the celebration.

“I’ve been privileged to be part of this historic landmark. I started here as a teacher 30 years ago and I have seen the school reach new heights,” he said.

Beneke said he left the school in 1999 before returning in 2004.

“When I came back in 2004, I was appointed principal, which was and is still a great feeling. To lead brings responsibility, but I’m glad I have awesome educators and children,” he said.

“Our slogan is basically to make one’s life worthwhile. We inspire the kids to reach greatness.”

In 2014, the school introduced English classes and Beneke said he welcomed the trend of the school becoming multiracial.

“We have introduced English classes from grade R to Grade three, but our aim is to have English classes until grade 12 in the near future,” he said.

“We realise a lot of people in Suideberg are English speaking especially in the new development. We as the school wanted to cater for them as they are closer to us than to English medium schools.”
