Houses left unfinished, no explanation given

Winterveldt residents remain homeless while houses stand empty.

An RDP housing development in Winterveldt has been left uncompleted and no official explanation has been given.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) mayoral candidate, Solly Msimanga said this week following his site visit that he failed to understand why the houses have remained uncompleted.

“What I discovered is there are 100s of RDP houses that were built and left unfinished. After checking with the provincial human settlement department (housing department) I am told as far as they are concerned, these houses are counted as those that are completed and occupied,” said Msimanga.

He said an investigation should be conducted into who got the tender, how much did they get paid, and why is the project not finished three to four years down the line?

Msimanaga said he was saddened by the fact that the houses were now being used for criminal activities.

“We were told by local residents that two women were recently raped at the site,” he said.

He says the department has a lot of questions to answer. Who is now supposed to pay for finishing the project?

“While our people are struggling, living in less suitable conditions, some tenderpreneur is laughing all the way to the bank.”

A caring government that put people first would not be allowing such to happen.

“We most likely will be told that a new tender will be awarded to finish these houses, which means more millions that should be channeled towards building more houses will now be used to finish these, that have already been paid for.”

He said Winterveldt residents deserve better.

A media query has been sent to the provincial department of housing.
