Police make their presence felt
One pub was closed down after a police raid when it was found to be operating in contravention to the liquor act.
The Sunnyside cluster and the Villieria police had a crime prevention campaign in East Lynn on Thursday, putting up a roadblock in Baviaanspoort.
Captain Koba Brits said the Tshwane metro police, SAPS public order and rapid response units joined the Sunnyside cluster of police stations for a sweep in the Villieria area.
“During the roadblock, R 9 500 worth of traffic fines was issued and numerous vehicles and people were searched,” she said.
“Four pubs were inspected, one shut down and the other three fined up to R1 500 for contravening the Liquor act.”
She urged residents to immediately report to the police any suspicious vehicles or people they see in their area.
The public must work together with the police to ensure a decrease in crime, she said.
She also gave the following tips to motorists:
– Ensure your vehicle is always in good condition,
– Make sure the vehicle has enough fuel and your cellphone is charged,
– Do not leave valuable items such as parcels, cellphones, handbags and laptops visible in a parked vehicle, rather lock them in the boot,
– Keep all doors and windows locked,
– Always park in a well-lit, safe place at night,
– Avoid driving after dark, especially between 18:00 and 22:00, as much as possible,
– Do not pick up hitch-hikers,
– If you are followed, drive to the nearest police station,
– Do not open your window when a stranger approaches your vehicle
– Keep a list of emergency numbers in your vehicle,
– When you stop, look out for suspicious people lurking around
