Sport Highlights 29 April – 2 May
Despite the long weekend ahead, couch potatoes as well as active sportsmen can look forward to plenty of action to keep them busy.
The upcoming long weekend means more sports action for sports enthusiasts, as there are also sporting events to follow on Monday.
Cricket
Indian Premier League reaches its halfway mark this weekend. At this stage, there are a few teams that do very well, but there is still much cricket to be played before the semi-final candidates will be known.
There are of course action in this league throughout the weekend and a number of South Africans will also be involved.
On Friday, the Rising Pune Supergiants, with Faf du Plessis and Albie Morkel in their midst, plays against Dale Steyn’s Gujarat Lions.
At the weekend, their will be two games per day as usual. The first game on Saturday is between the Delhi Daredevils and the Kolkata Knight Riders. JP Duminy, Quinton de Kock, Imran Tahir and Chris Morris could be in action for the first mentioned, while Morné Morkel will probably be part of the Knight Riders, coached by Jacques Kallis.
In the second match on Saturday, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (without any South Africans) will take on the Royal Challengers Bangalore, which is the team of AB de Villiers and David Wiese.
Sunday’s first action is between Steyn’s Gujarat Lions and the Kings XI Punjab team, which could include men like David Miller, Kyle Abbot and Farhaan Behardien.
In the second match on Sunday, Faf and Albie’s Rising Pune Supergiants takes on the Mumbai Indians, where Marchant de Lange could be part of the bowling attack.
On Monday, a public holiday almost all over the world, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (De Villiers and Wiese) plays against Kallis’ Kolkata Knight Riders, where Morné Morkel could be in action.
Rugby
The Bulls are starting their tour this weekend with their first game in Australia against the Western Force in Perth. This game starts on Friday afternoon at 13:00 (SA time).
Because of the long weekend, most of the fixtures in local club leagues (Carlton Cup and others) will already be completed by Thursday evening.
Athletics
The Wally Hayward Marathon, which has become synonymous with Labour Day, will be held in Centurion on May 2 this year. This year this popular marathon will be held for the 40th time by Alpha Centurion Runners and Walkers. The Wally Hayward Marathon will be presented in Centurion again this year with the start and finish at the Zwartkop Hoërskool. The event offers athletes also have the option of a 21.1km half marathon and a 10km road race. The marathon will start at 06:30.
Soccer
After the temporary interruption of the past weekend due to the action in the Nedbank Cup, the Premier Soccer league will continue this weekend.
SuperSport United is the local team that gets to start the action when they take on Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Friday night at 20:00.
On Saturday its Mamelodi Sundowns’ turn. They have a big nut to crack when they play against Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld at 20:15.
The struggling AmaTuks, who still could not get away from the fright of relegation at the bottom of the log, plays against Jomo Cosmos at last mentioned’ new home ground, Olen Park in Potchefstroom, on Sunday. This game starts at 15:00.
