Saulsville hostel dwellers forced to live in squalor
The unallocated housing units in Saulsville stand empty while hostel dwellers live in squalor.
Hostel dwellers in Saulsville have been forced to live in squalor due to unallocated housing units, according to the Democratic Alliance (DA).
DA Tshwane mayoral candidate Solly Msimanga said on Freedom Day residents in the hostels lived in poor conditions.
“Today as I visit the Saulsville hostel precinct, the lack of development after 22 years of an ANC government is palpable and agonising. The residents here cannot be said to have celebrated Freedom Day, when their daily experience is of dilapidation and squalor.”
He said women and children were robbed of their dignity as they were forced to live in squalor.
“Here, like in many towns around the country where labourers are forced to live together in cramped spaces, adults have absolutely no dignity. Showers are communal and the toilets are door-less. “
During the speech, Msimanga said the Tshwane metro and provincial government should investigate how family housing units with less than 50m2 each had a cost price of R 817 000 each when taking into account the R85 million budget.
“Allegations of corruption against the local ANC councillor were reported by the residents regarding the fact that people who had not lived in Saulsville hostel previously were assured they would occupy the units when completed,” he said.
He added that the situation could get out hand given that families who were supposed to live in the houses, stayed in dirty homes.
“This poses a potentially volatile situation among the various residents as hundreds of rightful beneficiaries to occupy the family housing units continue to live in squalor next to the housing units where services such as water, electricity and ablution facilities are erratic privileges.”
The ANC could not be reached for comment by the time this report was published.
