Ga-Rankuwa protesters vow they will have the last word
Residents of Ga-Rankuwa continued their protest for better roads on Tuesday this week.
Residents of Ga-Rankuwa are adamant that they will have the last word in the upcoming elections.
This comes after their protests, which has been taking place over several weeks and in which they demanded better roads and infrastructure and threatened to boycott the election if their demands were not met, fell on deaf ears.
The protest continued this morning (Tuesday) in Ga-Rankuwa Zone 1.
“We have handed countless memorandums to the powers that be. And since they are not taking us seriously…we have decided we will not vote. We will see what happens between now and then. But our people are saying, ‘let’s go and vote’. They say, ‘let’s go and have the last word’. We will decide what to do. Even if we decide to go and vote… we are confident we will go there as a unit with one voice and one intention which is to vote out these people,” said community spokesperson Thabang Molefe.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mathews Nkoadi said a police contingent was deployed at Ga-Rankuwa in the event that the highly charged service delivery protest turned violent.
The residents are demanding tarred roads and the re-zoning of their area, among other things.
They barricaded some roads with tyres and other objects they set alight saying their attempts to discuss their concerns with the Tshwane metro and the provincial government was not successful.
One resident, who didn’t want to be identified, said the protest was about development, construction of roads in the area and basic services.
