High school gets computer lab
Minister Siyabonga Cwele launched a computer lab at DA Makoma High School in Mabopane on Friday.
A computer lab was launched at DA Mokoma High School in Mabopane on Friday.
The launch, in partnership with Telkom, aimed at providing pupils with access to the internet to enhance their learning experience.
At the event, Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services Siyabonga Cwele said the new lab would transform the school into a “learning facility of the future”.
The core focus would be to improve subjects such as maths and science.
“It would equip pupils with skills to be active participants in the digital economy,” said Cwele.
Pupils would be provided with access to computer labs, a library and free access to the internet.
The department has also been vocal about the need for further training and development of South African teachers.
A pupil’s ability to gain access to and understand digital content depended on the teacher being comfortable with using technology devices in the classroom, said Cwele.
The department of education said to change the face of education in township schools, teachers needed to be competent, which is why the department recruited educators for the school through TEACH South Africa.
