Breakthrough against cable theft

Metro police and CPI capture nine cable thieves in morning operation.

A breakthrough has been made in the fight against cable theft in Centurion.

The Tshwane metro police and Combined Private Investigations (CPI) caught nine cable thieves in Heuweloord in the early hours of Sunday.

A spokesman for CPI said a call was received from a lookout at 02:45 that an underground feeder cable had been stolen.

“We immediately responded and heard that the thieves had loaded the cable on a bakkie and were heading for the R55,” said the spokesperson.

“We followed them to the R55 and along with the metro police forced them off the road and arrested them.”

The nine men had the 22m stretch of cable in their possession.

Back at the scene, investigators found that the thieves had already begun stripping the cable as they were carrying it to the bakkie. Unusable pieces of the cable’s covers were scattered at the scene.

“This is a definite breakthrough,” the spokesperson said.

“Heuweloord has always been a problem when it comes to cable theft. It should be much quieter now.”

DA Tshwane spokesperson for electricity Ina Strijdom lauded the efforts of the team for clamping down on cable theft.

The nine are due in court soon.
