German Schule wins international competition
The Deutsche Schule Pretoria won first prize in the worldwide Learners Build Bridges competition.
The Deutsche Schule Pretoria (DSP) recently won first prize in the Learners Build Bridges competition in Berlin.
DSP entered its robotics programme, which it has been running for three years.
Spokesperson Linde Leeflang said the school introduced nursery school children to robotics by giving them Lego blocks to play with, and there was a structured robotics programme for grades 3 to senior pupils.
“Many of the DSP pupils successfully participated in regional, national and international robotics competitions,” said Leeflang.
She said the programme reached out to 19 partner schools in the neighbouring townships – Mamelodi and Eersterust – where workshops were held for teachers.
Neighbouring schools were also offered lessons over weekends, she said.
Leeflang said DSP made a video of its programme and this was entered into the competition.
Norbert Klevenz, head of the DSP and the driving force behind this entry, was extremely excited by the win and the €60 000 prize money (approximately R1-million).
The cheque was presented to the DSP delegation by the German Minister of Foreign Affairs Walter Steinmeier at a prestigious function in Berlin.
Leeflang said the school would use the money to sponsor pupils who wanted to enter internships with firms in Germany.
She said an internship allowed the pupils to broaden the understanding of robotics at the school and in workplaces.
She said DSP was absolutely delighted and ecstatic to have won this prize.
Leeflang congratulated the German schools in Washington DC and Cairo that came second and third respectively.
A total of 141 German schools entered the competition.
