Good Samaritans help Henru celebrate his birthday
“I was told that he would not live for a long time and today I get to see him turn 16, through contributions from family and other supporters, we made sure he could celebrate his birthday.”
Centurion residents helped bedridden Henru Grobelaar celebrate his 16th birthday at the Sorex Estate on Saturday evening.
According to Henru’s father, Hendrik, his son was in a car accident when he was only eight months and three weeks old.
“He [Henru] was travelling in a car with his mother and other siblings; sitting on his mother’s lap feeding from a bottle. She was driving,” said Grobelaar.
Since then Henru has had various operations, and his father, now divorced from his wife, is paying the bills alone.
Hendrik, a lieutenant-colonel at the Wierdabrug police station, is raising Henru as a single parent assisted by a caregiver.
This has also placed a financial burden on Hendrik.
Nevertheless, Hendrik posted on his Facebook page that he wanted to surprise Henru with a party for his 16th birthday with loved ones, family and friends as well as strangers.
There was widespread support from people who came not only to help make Henru’s birthday a memorable one, but also to make a donation.
Ilze Jones, a colleague and close friend of Hendrik’s, applauded Hendrik for being a supportive dad and never leaving Henru’s side.
“Hendrik was transferred from Harrismith because he needed to be closer to medical facilities for Henru’s sake. That was almost 13 years ago. He is an amazing dad to Henru and his other children.”
